Hello, Does any one have a problem with very fine swirl marks in thier windshield causing glare in the sunshine? It also happens in the dark when cager headlights are coming at me. It makes it kinda hard to see. I know you should look over and not through but I am a short guy and didn't like the 15" shield (plus the wife complained when riding 2 up). Any thing that can be done about this without going shieldless. I plan on cutting the 19 down to 17. I am careful about cleaning it and don't rub dirt into it.
There are compounds that will help this minor scratching. Believe it or not paper towels do scratch, hope youre not using that to clean. I use plexus and a torn cotton shirt.
Im, sorry I cant remember the compounds, but they are out there!
Bike shields are plastic and all will eventually get the swirls, the glass polishes help. Like Novis ect. Best is to cut the shield down an inch below your line of sight so you look over the shield. If you ever start lookin over the shields you won't go back to lookin thru a shield. and the wife will just have to get used to the wind or ride her own.
But if you just got to look thru a shield, heres a tip for you. Carry some black electrrical tape and when your ridein into the sun put a peice of tape on the windshield and you can duck behind the tape so the sun is blocked out by the tape. it helps sometimes. the tape ideal works good with face shields too. good luck
I use 3 drops of dish wash liquid in a spray bottle, and a super micro fiber cloth. No scratches and it works very well. I also use the same for a quick touch up.
If you have the scratches already, the NOVUS series is the only way I know how to straighten it out. And that is not a certain deal.
As posted, the key is NOT getting them in the first place.
This time of year, 15 miles or less, and you are covered in bugs here.
I use hot water and commercial car soap, sprayed on to loosen bug doo.
Then use a stream of hot water and soap to spray them off, NO rubbing. Having done it dozens of times, I have my little pump and hoses set up all summer. Takes less than 15 minutes to do the shield, lights and front end.
No rubbing, no bugs. Same goes for the work van and Momma's cage.
One thing I noticed in general on glass and plexiglass (aside from scratching) is that something like Windex will leave a residue that causes glare in oncoming lights at night. Believe it or not (and use at your own risk) after your normal cleaning, go back over it with newspaper and Windex (or whatever your cleaner is). Takes off the residue and all those little swirls that seem to just move around rather than come off. At least for me, no more glare.
