I have 10 days off of work coming up and was thinking about going to Key West to ride. Has anyone been there on a bike and if so, would you recommend this trip?
I live in NC and if anyone knows another trip, please feel free to let me know.
I vacation there every New Years with the family. The ride down through the Keys is great. Watch the 7 mile bridge on windy days as it can get a little uncomfortable. Good stops for lunch are at Islamorada about MM80. Be sure to fill up with gas somewhere near Homestead so you can make it all the way down. Take 2 cans of fix a flat or tubes and patch kit and a quart of oil as there is no place to get a tire there. In an emergency, the only bike shop I know of is a metric shop across the street from the Green Parrot Bar on Whitehead Street. Make sure where ever you stay has secured parking. I also recommend you get 2 disc brake locks and a chain lock and lock it at night. The Hilton parking garage on Front Street is secured at night if necessary but costs $$$.
Whatever you do make sure you don't go riding down there without a hotel or condo reservation like a lot of people do. It's very busy this time of year but lots of fun. If you want a list of good bars & restaurants PM me and I'll give you a few.
This time of the year the Keys is the direction to go in. I've ridden it twice and its a nice ride once you get in the Key's themselves. If it was more into the summer I'd say Maine, Vermont and Northern New York. I love riding up in that area. To me the view is so much nicer than the flat lands/beaches of Florida.

I've done the ride many times from SC. It's a great trip. I like to stay at the Best Western Hibiscus. It is a block away from Duvall Street (where all the partying is) and walking distance to about everything. It is an older motel, but kept up nicely. The staff is very friendly. There is a breakfast counter in a drug store across the street that does a good morning or noon meal.
