Hi all, New to the board. At 51 and on 4th bike not sure I am a newbie but this is 1st Harley so we are trying to learn the language.... What is:
"EVO" - figure its an Evolution motor but .....why motor designation and not bike type?
"Bagger" - I don't get this. Hate to be dumb. But a lot of diff. bikes have saddlebags - are they all then Baggers? Or any bike that has bags as standard. Does this make my EGC a Bagger Dresser? lol
Our new to us Bike is '03 100th ann. Silver&black Electraglide classic. Will be a year this Oct. and we will have put 6000 miles on it; all 2 up with the better half - oops forgot the language thingy - all 2up with the OL ridin' bitch.
Welcome to HDF. I'm sorta' new to this stuff too. Looks like you haven't gotten a response yet by those with far more knowledge about this stuff than I have, but I'll try to offer some answers:
I think HD is classed by engine type on account of it being the most distinctive piece on the bike. When you stop to think about it, the basic shape/models/etc haven't changed a great deal for several years. Agreed, the new Rocker and a few others are "radical" departures for HD, but overall, HD styling has remained consistent for some time.
A "Bagger" is what we used to call "Dressers" when we were kids. Basically it is a dolled-up HD that has side bags. There are likely definitions that fine tune this basic, but this is the way I understand it.
Know what'cha mean on the addin' up the miles. Bought the first HD November of last year... have already racked up nearly 8,000 miles. Would have ridden it more... but life keeps getting in the way!!
Thanks LAMing. Oh and liked that you identified who & where you are. I should remember that. I would bet a lot of the country is covered on here.
What did you put 8000 miles on. A great number IMO <<(I did figure out IMO & IMHO) lol
Bought an 02' Deuce w/3000 miles on it. (Think the color is called "Gun Metal Blue"?) Came equipped with V&H Big Shots, 21" 60 spoke front wheel (wider), new chrome rear wheel, fatter rear tire, bullet turn signals, new headlight, chrome grip controls/levers/front disc brake canister, new shifter/brake peddles, extra seat (wider), saddle bags, chrome license tag holder... and many of the original parts sent along too. Got all the above for 12K.
I hope to take a new sig pic with my own bike in it "soon".
I believe the forums are separated by both model type...(Dyna, softtail, etc), and engine type (EVO, etc), so people can get specific information. You may run into an issue that other Dyna owners run into, regardless of engine type. Or, say I have a problem with my EVO engine, I can get advice from ANYONE with an EVO and not just the Dyna EVO owners.
Some of these abbreviations are tricky to figure out, but as for your better half.... you can use "OL" for "Old Lady", some guys use "Momma", "BH" for "Better Half", but unless she truly is a bitch, and proud of it, I wouldn't use that one often... she may just discover the forum!!
Google around for "biker lingo/slang," if that's what you want (not that all that is HD-only kind of stuff)
As for the HD terms, just check out each sub-forum and see what they chat about. Ask any question that comes to mind when you're there. Folks here are real helpful.
While many bikes can have saddlebags, GENERALLY (at least with HD), baggers are bikes built on HD's touring frame. Street Glide, Road King, Electra Glide's and Road Glides.
The engine designations are used,IMO, because the same type of engine is used in multiple models and to confuse it a little more, multiple engines are used in the same model across multiple years. That's a lot of multiples.
It's just an easy way to classify what you ride.
As far as knowing where someone is from, some folks put their town/state in their profile so it shows up in the top right corner of the post. Yours shows Charlotte,NC.
This site might help. Still learning here also. We've got an 07 Ultra and put 12331 miles on so far since Oct. last year. The BH rides along 90% of the time. I bought the service manual for mine and have learned a lot. I'm doing all of my own maintenance. A lot of good people here too; help with answers. Welcome to the board.
