Default Trick Key

Thought I'd let you know of one of those 'WTF' situations that happened to me last week.

I ride my bike to work every day, and leave it in a bike parking area that is publicly accessible but under cover and has security etc. When I pulled the key out of the bike it felt a bit strange but I just put it down to the steering not being quite in the right position. The ignition key position on my bike, an 06 FXDCI, is very hard to see, particularly for a tall bloke like me. Anyway, I activated the alarm, keys & fob in pocket, and off I went.

When I came back to the bike I reached in to my jacket pocket where the key lives while I'm at work. I guess the first indication that something wasn't right was when I felt around for the key but hey - no metal in there ??? Instant cold sweat. Put down all of my gear and franticly started going through my pockets. What I did dig up was the black plastic cover that slips over the metal key itself. The key and the cover had separated. OK so where was the key ? Not in my bag or jacket or anywhere on me.

Checked the bike and - holy crap, the key was still in the ignition. When I pulled the key out (or thought that's what I was doing) that morning, I hadn't rotated it fully around to the locked position and the key had stayed put, while the cover came off on my hand. I thought I had the key but it stayed in the ignition all day. An overwhelming feeling of relief, then stupidity followed.

With the alarm and immobiliser activated no-one could have started it (or no normal person anyway) so that did make me feel better. Lucky the ignition key position is not obvious though because someone might have taken it.

Anyway, something to keep in the back of your mind, when you park your bike, make sue you leave with the key, the whole key and nothing but the key.

I'm right there with you. The feeling of relief, then stupidity. It is a regular occassion with me on many subjects. Sometimes we are all dorks. Be thankful it was still here and hopefully all of us learn something. Thanks

Yep....I had my bike a whole week....mine was stuck in the fork lock. I owe someone, somewhere, something, for it still being there when I returned.

Instant terror.....just add no key.......and some flunkie is pulling wheelies with your new bike. I think I'm going to go throw up and then go to bed. I want a biometric retina scan device to lock my bike which is attached to a 5 kiloton nuclear warhead welded to the frame so if some cheese dick rips off my bike it vaporizes him once he gets more than 10 miles from the key fob (in my pocket)..........

that way I just come out of my office and look for the mushroom cloud

Oh yeah........almost forgot about everybody who is near my bike when it goes off............sorry[]
