Aftery reading this post to the topic on "Bloody Security system" started by 'Foxster', I did the same key mod that 'bobnehoc' did. I rode with the key and fob in my pocket for the first time in 7,000 miles and over a year. Why did Harley Davidson make the original key design so it couldn't be removed when the ignition was on? I thought that nub was required to make the key work in the ignition. Obviously not. I ground off the nub this morning and no more "Floppin' Fob" for Sailor Don. I'm a happy biker.

Now I have to see if I can polish the frame around the ignition to the original gloss.

nope... I've tried. I stopped keeping my fob on my key and keep it in my vest pocket all the time, but have that same dull mark and have tried to do everything save polishing compound to get it back to the same shine and I have gotten it pretty close but no cigar.

I have always kept the fob in my watch pocket. The key goes there too whenever I park the SB. The thought of the fob banging around in the wind while riding never seemed right to me. Having the little circle clip break and the fob disappearing along the road was a cause of distress.

I use the key chains that you can separate. Got it at a box store for a dollar. Keep the fob on one end with my truck keys, and the Harley key on the other. Take the key chains apart use the key for the bike and the other keys go in the pocket. What is the big deal about that?

i put a thicker key ring on the fob because i figured the wind would break the flimsy one that HD gave me.

seperating the fob/key for me really isn't an option as i'm prone to misplacing things when they're seperated.

to keep it off my frame i put one of those cheap caribiners (clips the climbers use) on the ring and clip it onto one of the cables or lines that are over by my ignition.

it limits the amount of movement the fob has, so it doesn't rub the frame.

+1 for editbrain's route. I had a quick disconnect for the key, and the garage opener and fob stayed on a clip on my belt. Until I got the Fat Bob, and now they all stay in my pocket!

Why do they keep adding more unecessary electrical? Next thing you kow they are going to have a numerical keypad on the side of the tank to unlock the bike and fingerprint recognition to start it. Heck, they might already have that for all i know. Sounds like the whole coding with your blinker buttons, or however that works, is getting pretty close. What's wrong with using your key to start the bike, and the built in neck lock for security, end of story?

Yeah I think I saw it in the under $50.00 or less mods. You just glue or a thin magnet to the back of the fob. They even have magnetic strips with adheasive. Then just place the fob on the frame while its attached to the key ring. No rattle or scuffs.
