it's an absolutely amazing site watching people of all classes, colors, and walks of life all lining up together just for ice, water, and mre's. it's such a humbling experience to watch it all. makes you realize just how much we take for granted. so glad it's not another katrina disaster. the government has really learned from their mistakes. of course, it's not perfect, but situations like this never are. you can tell they're all honestly doing the best they can though. i don't think the mayor of houston, galveston, and the texas governor have slept a wink since the storm made landfall.
there are parts of galveston and bolivar peninsula that will NEVER be the same. but we're strong people, and i know we'll all pull through it. it's going to take a LONG LONG time though. my heart and prayers go out to the tens of thousands of people who tried to stick it out and who are now missing, possibly lost forever to the sea.
they estimated 40% of the island stayed behind, a total of 40,000 people or more. 2500 approx have been rescued either during the storm or after, 4000 are in shelters, and the others haven't been accounted for. the officials are being very very quiet as to possible death tolls, not wanting to incite more panic than there already is. I just hope that they all made it out safely. God speed to all of them.
