I was on a ride with a few friends and we stopped at a gas station to take a brake and have a cold drink. I was standing by my bike when this old woman walks by. A nice little old lady had to be at least 70 or so. Anyway as she is walking by she looks at my bike then looks at me and says “That dam thing is cleaner than my house”
My bike's usually covered in bugs - I'll clean it maybe once a month with a quick wash. Probably ever 2nd or 3rd month I'll spend a couple hours polishing what chrome there is and cleaning the wheels. I figure, if it's too clean, you don't ride enough Either that, or you're retired.

Similar thing happend to me a few weeks ago. Stopped at a rest area somewhere in Michigan and a little elderly lady stopped her car, rolled down the window, and said "That's the shinyest thing I've ever seen". It was the first day of a week long trip and it was not nearly so shiny by the end of the week. I try to keep all the bikes clean, but am not obsessive about it. They get dirty and sometimes stay that way a few weeks. If it's nice enough to ride, I ride. If it's a crappy day I like to go out and clean them up. It's a good excuse to spend some quality time with them.
I wipe the bare metal areas of the old Ironhead down with WD-40 every once an a while to keep the rust off of her (live close to the beach). I wipe the oil and grime off the old Dyna when I happen to notice some extra (seems to run better) cause it likes it. I have washed both bikes once in the last two years.
I've owned around 40 motorcycles in my life. The only time I ever cleaned one was the day I put it up for sale. I leave it up to God, if he thinks it's too dirty, He'll rain on it and wash the dirt off. Trucks too.
I keep my bike clean. I take pride in it. I had a young guy I didn't even know rag on me one time cause my bike was so clean. He said "don't you ever ride it"? He was riding a dirty sport bike and I think he looked on the dirt as a point of pride, sort of like those teenage boys that have the jacked up 4X4 trucks and go out mudding and leave the mud all over it including the windows. Sort of a teenage badge of courage. They'll grow up. Maybe.
