Broken engine case
Sounds like you have a modern day problem that can be traced back to the Stealership and old day issues. You gotta decide whether to suck it up, fix it and keep it, or fix it, dump it and get something that will work for you.
Feel your pain. Been there...done it!
That said, I like the 'lemon' garland gig.

IF after wranglin' with 'em, the MoCo won't come thru for ya, and you have to bite the bullet, do as suggested above, snap up on a big inch Ultima, or S&S. We have had very good luck with the Ultima 124. More snoose than one really needs, but a lot of bang for the 'buck', IMHO.
Too bad it is an 05.... http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/mcy/838140483.html Larry can get a deal out the back door on these critters, that is just unreal. Saves THOUSANDS.
Good luck with it.
Sort of off topic, but Panz4ever hit on a topic from a week or so ago. Ppl asking about the HD sound, and idling the motor 'way down' to get that 'potato' sound, and the 'lope'. HARD on flywheels. Can, and has, knocked them outta balance. Can be BAD enough to take out a case once in a while. At best, will drive you out of the saddle from the vibration. Thanx, Panz.

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
It is a very long time ago now, but the only time I had really major problems with a bike was with a particular model of BSA, which broke its conrod and did horrible damage, to valves, cam followers, piston and cylinder. A close friend had the same model and the same problem around the same time. He took the rude shouting abusive approach and got nothing out of the factory, while I took the polite approach and got most of my costs back.
That is likely to be the least expensive way! Having said that I have just fitted an S&S to my Harley....
....but through choice, not because I had any problems!
