Evidently sales are down. Not where I live though. 09 big twins are flying out the doors at the dealers. Might see a slowdown now though with this financial fiasco were in. http://www.newsday.com/classified/au...,2332989.story
I am in the market for a new Dyna or Softail (if/when my Sporty sells).
Local Stealer is already giving me bull**** about supply & demand (ie. pricing) for 2009s.
Hopefully, I can go in Jan/Feb cash in hand and walk out with my butthole intact.
I dunno. I work in a grinding house that does work for a MOCO supplier. Our machines dedicated to grinding rocker arm shafts and shifter shafts seldom sit idle.

I read the article linked by the OP above. It jives with other things I've read.
Moco has cut production at a rate greater than the slowdown in sales. There could indeed be a shortage of bikes. Sucks, I know.
Just for me, I'm hoping for a screamin' deal on a used RUB bike this winter. The problem I've found so far is that with the bikes I've found, the owner owes more on the bike than it's worth and doesn't have the cash to pay it down to sell it. I'll just keep waiting for one that's paid off or paid down.
There will be lots of guys in a pinch who will be selling toys, imho.

Where are you?
Seems like some parts of the country reflect slower Harley sales than others. I've heard of several dealer discount programs in the Northeast.
Generally, I wish buyers would simply refuse to pay any of the dealer add-on cost items (doc. fee, setup, etc.) as those are nothing more than a dealer padding his already generous profit on an MSRP bike. Plus, they make huge margins of bling and clothing items.
Don't get me wrong--I want HD corporate and dealers to be profitable and stay in business. But the rip-off of all the extra junk; well, I'm not going to pay it. That new bike can just sit there in the dealership and we're both happy--the dealer still has his bike and I still have my money.
...snip...

I think you're dead-on correct.
There seems to be a lot of folks who are upside-down financially on their bikes. Those low payments over 72 months look great; but, you're very quickly in a position--especially in a soft market--of owing more that it's worth.
I've been following about two-dozen Harleys (Fat Boys and Superglides mostly) on eBay. All but two have not sold due to the reserve not being met. Wow. I'm sure there's some serious after-auction haggling going on between owners and high bidders; but, I suspect JBaker is right: The reserve prices are reflecting loan pay-offs higher than anyone is willing to bid.
I applaud your patience, JBaker. Never disengage your brain--even when shopping for a passionate toy!

This financial fiasco "we're" in, is mostly a media invention. The biggest impact is on a small percentage of people who already had financial issues - nothing has really changed for them. The biggest impact on most of us is the media hyped has helped to drop home prices a bit - which is great if you're buying, sucks if you're selling, and means nothing if you're staying where you are.
Most Americans are doing as well, or poorly, as they were a year ago, two years ago, five years ago.

I disagree completely. Too many Americans live on the edge with their budgets - paycheck to paycheck.
With the increased prices of gas and food alone, many people are running up credit card balances, doing without things etc. etc. They are in a pinch because they were already on the edge.
That's not to mention the very real problem of millions of people with variable rate mortgages who's payments have increased beyond their abilities to pay.
There is a crunch that's affecting a lot of folks and that's not hype by anyone. Maybe they were dumb to get into the crunch, but they are there.

Not sure how sales are where I live in SC as I don't frequent dealerships. I am on the mailing list for a dealership in the NYC city area and evidently they are offering some pretty good deals to move both leftover 08's and new 09 bikes as evidenced by the ad below for New Rochelle HD.
I was in the local dealer last Sat.
They only had 2 09 touring bikes ( elec. standard and a RK classic), noticably fewer bikes in general and only 2 used bikes sitting outside instead of the usual 20-30. Seems I see a different salesman working there everytime I go in.
