Gasoline availability
The "official" reason is that Ike shut down some refineries on the gulf coast. Truth is the refineries are reporting that 3/4's of them are back to 100% and the others are getting close.
The only reason we had shortages then, was because of the panic buying. I think so many states are hyping the crackdown on price gouging this time around, the gas companies are like fine, we'll get it there when we get it there, no rush, let em wait.
I really believe that there is no shortage, there should be more gas than post Katrina, and yet there is less gas than post Katrina. The only logical reason I can find is related to the anti-price gouging, either they're in fear of getting charged with it, at a station level, so they don't buy the over priced gas from the distributor, or somewhere up the pipeline they're trying to remind the goverments who's boss, and that is the oil/gas companies, not the government.
And if there's any truth to this theory, it is a microcosm of what would happen if the Dems get there way and implement the 'windfall profit tax' on the oil companies. If you get paid $10 an hour, and work 40 hrs a week, making $400, and the boss comes to you and says you are capped out at $300 from now on, you still earn $10 an hr, but can't earn more than $300 a week, are you going to keep working 40 hrs? No, coz you can't make $400 anymore, you're going to work 30 hrs, to make your $300. (sucky wages, but easy math, you get the idea).
So, if you implement a windfall profit tax, the oil companies will make just enough oil to make as much as they can get away with, there is no incentive to produce more oil/gas if there's no additional profit to be had, so we would likely see massive shortages on a national level, not just a regional level like this.
Don't get me wrong, I think the oil/gas companies are screwing us in general, but I'm just pointing out that the windfall profit tax would have a negative effect, similar, if not worse, than what we are experiencing in the SE right now...
