I have a 2009 Ultra Classic, the headset that I got with the bike went bad in only 2 days..left speaker went dead. I knew things weren't going good when any amount of bass in caused my left headset speaker to get heavily distorted.
I bought one for the wife from HD, however she isn't very happy with the tinny sound and says it only sounds good when we talk to each other, the radio sounds weak & crappy.
I was thinking about getting a refund on the one I bought for her, and of course exchanging mine that came with the bike for another HD one. I know J&M elites are popular, but are those the best headsets for clarity for both talking and good music quality?
Well, I haven't tried any other kind of headset than the HD ones, but I don't expect good bass from such small speakers. I have set my bass at the center position, and reduced the treble to about 3 bars, and I get reasonable sound at that setting. The problem really is about extraneous noise that gets in the way of good sound. The HD sound is quite good at slower speeds, but you'll never get thumping bass from any helmet speaker.
The reason the intercom and cb sound so good, is that voice frequencies seem to penetrate extraneous noise better than higher and lower sound frequencies. JMHO though.
