Default does my helmet fit

Just picked up an softail custom and a new helmet to go w/ it. The helmet I picked up is the bennie type w/ a small visor. Thehelmet is fine until I go over 40 mph, than it strangles me under my chin I can fell the whole helmet lifting off of my head. Maybe this is normal, I am used to a full face helmet and I never had any problems it. Maybe I need to fasten it super tight and deal with the strangle, but it is really uncomfortable. Any suggestions? Thanks and safe riding, I did 60 miles on my new bike today and now I understand the Harley Smile.

Remove the visor and keep it as tight as you can stand without being uncomfortable.

I have a large full face (snug fit) and a medium HD half helmet. When this helmet was "fitted" it was explained to me if the helmet moves on your head, strapped on tight. then it's too big. I usually had the same problems with my half helmet lifting at speed but the removable windshield cured that problem. I'll try the visor trick some day.

Yeah +1 on the remove the visor. Also it sounds a little like the helmet is a tad to large for you. When not riding put it on and pull the strap snug, not to tight though. If the helmet still moves around your head quite a bit, as in will move to the position you described then it is to big. it should feel snug and move only a tiny bit. if you feel a preasure on your forhead that is uncomfortable then it is to small.

my advice is go to a dealer and have them help you, most of them ride and wear helmets and will (should) know what they are talking about and be able to give you the right advice.

Disagree. I have both a full and a half and ride a fxdc. I think its a fit issue. ALL of the HD half-helmets fit me like crap. Even with the strap TIGHT, the helmet could easily be rocked forward off my head and was generally loose. Tried various sizes and nothing was the proper snug fit.

Someone on the forum suggested Fulmer half helmets as better fitting certain head-shapes. I found an indy dealer that stocked them and found a flat-black-vizorless that fits PERFECT. I've ridden 80mph plus on my windshieldless dyna and don't have the mushrooming problem (just a heck of a lot of wind noise).

I suggest having someone help fitting you properly and trying different manufacturers.

I've found both Fulmer and Vega to fit well and both are very well made plus they have the added attraction of being relatively inexpensive at about $50 or so. I use a Fulmer AF-255 3/4 helmet when it's chilly or sometimes when on a long ride on the slab and a Vega XTS half helmet the rest of the time. Both fit me like a glove (not fingerless). The moral of this here story is you absolutely have to try them on and make sure they're snug. Wiggle them around and push up on them at the front and see how they move. You'll get a pretty good idea as to what they'll feel like at speed.

It sounds like its a little to big and isn't fitting snug enough.
