Yes, I agree, and yet I'm still going to lower it. It sounds ridiculous at 1000 rpm with my V&H Big shots. What's worse ist it idles at 1200 when it's cold. Why Harley has to make this so difficult is beyond me. My friend has a carbed bike and it idles at 900 rpm and sounds perfect! I should have bought a carb
Dang Bubba just take a 12 ga to it. It will be quicker.
One of the things that the advanced fuel injection does when the engine gets hot is lower the idle a few hundred rpm. So whats gonna happen when you "don't care and gonna lower it any way" to the magic number you think it should be.
The dealer won't do it because when it locks up from lack of oil, he knows you will be back wanting him to fix it. Oh I know, get your self some of that too slippery oil.
Before you blow it up why not pump it up ? Some compression and cams will give you that lumpy idle your after and make it run stronger. Just my two cents and your 5000.00 plus to rebuild it![8D]
is there a throttle position sensor on the HD EFI setup?
I can tell you from past car experiences that the EFI computer sets the idle speed, and if you go screwing with what you THINK is the idle adjust screw on the throttle body if throws off the entire EFI program and makes the ECM throw a check engine code because the computer isn't seeing the prper value for the sensor.
I will also pass on something from my flying experience. Pilots are warned against having the plane idle too low because it will cause spark plug fouling.
With a Fuelie, the ECM controls the cold idle.... 1200 is good.... The ECM can go down to 950 at op temp (260 degrees).
Should you decide that you are going to lower the idle yourself, understand that you will be starving your motor from the very fluid that you are relying on to keep it thumping... Motor Oil...
Plus, without the correct idle, you are preventing the other associated sensors and actuators from working in concert to keep the motor at operating peak.
This is especially true on bikes that have PC's... as they are merely signal thiefs and modifiers of the true sensor/actuator data.

Ah, Yea,,,,
I think MAYBE,,,,,JUST,,MAYBE,,,,
I'd take Bob's advise. He probably ONLY has about 3 or 4 degrees in MOTORCYCLEOLOGY and MECHANICS STUFF!
(Are those actually things??? LOL!!)
don't do the backplate screw. it will throw the tps out of wack. but you can set the idle down safely to 800 rpm with the sert and i believe its 750 with the power commander. i've been running my bikes at so low an idle that they will barely run for many years without any problems whatsoever......don't believe the scare tactics......your bike won't be starved of oil and it won't hurt the computer. the reason that it is set so high is for charging. the alternator doesn't charge that well untill the bike is running at about 1200rpms. see ya..

Thanks. I have done some research on this. I can't change the idle values with a power proggrammer according to their tech rep. The SERT however will allow me to adjust the values at all temp ranges. If I can't convince a dealer to make the changes , I will buy a SERT and use my laptop to change the values. I'll have that low down Harley rumble soon!!

your local dealer can also adjust the idle with a harley brand digital tech. all dealers have them. and it will only cost you the time for them to do it..
I been running my Ultra at 900 rpm hot.It now has 64k miles.Never had a problem. It runs cooler when in heavy traffic.Used the screw under the air filter plate.Just get it hot turn the screw counter a little bit at a time when you get to the desired rpm turn the bike off and pull the ecm fuse for a minute.Been to the stealer a bunch of times they never said a thing about the idle.My two cents worth
