I have owned both a Dyna and 2 softails. I really like my '07 fatboy. Fat and low. The dyna was a pain to get good saddlebags for while the softails have 1000's of anything you'll ever want in the aftermarket. I especially like the "rigid look" of the softail with no shocks in the way.

Yeah, the shock-less look is what I liked most about mine when I saw it. Now I'll take this opportunity to gratuitously post a picture since I finally have one I can actually post.
I have a `01 wideglide and a `07 deuce. I think the wideglide provides a more comfortable ride and has more room for 2-up riding over the deuce. Myself, I prefer the shake the wideglide has over the balanced engine in the deuce. For looks, the softail is hard to beat and because the deuce has the 96 it does have more power.
STTim......the first thing is ya gotta know the difference between "WHEELBASE" and "LENGTH"......they are two different things....that said, my Dyna is longer than a Softail Standard
Get a bagger from the Touring family and be done with it. You know you're going to have one someday. Why not now? Great buys out there on everything, try the 1/2 day rental program and get two bikes in one day and ride em back to back. That way it's fresh in your mind what you like/don't like on each model. Good luck.
Good point here! I got rid of my softail, then bought a Lowrider. Test drove a SG and now have one on order! It is cheaper for You to go straight to the touring family!
i will say one word DYNA.i wont slam the other it's not my style. but you can make a dyna what ever you want street bike ,canyon runner, road bike or all three. i have had two in two decades and loved them both.the one i have now is the best alround bike you can ask for but it is your choice best thing to do rent both for a couple of days and ride . best of luck on what ever you choose.
A hog is a hog!! It doesn't matter what'cha got, as long as you got one.
I based my choice on looks alone. when I looked at the dyna, I only saw the little things I didn't like. when I looked at the night train, my d*ck got hard!!
We'll all argue back and forth for weeks on wich one is better, but it all comes down to personal preference....what looks better, what's more comfortable....etc...
