I just swithched to Harley after anumber of years on BMWs. First an R1150RT, then an R1150R. I liked both beemers a lot. Fun, fast, safe (ABS etc.) and cool looking. But I happened upon upon a very nice '04 1200C Sportster last summer. I rode both and while I still enjoyed the R bike I found the Harley to deliver more smiles per mile. After much soul searching I decided to sell both the BMW and the Sporty and I took delivery on my 06 Wide Glide last Saturday. I think I will be happy!! The bike has lots more soul than anything I've ever ridden.
It does not handle as well though with that racked out front. But it is still WAY fun.
Just sold my GS. Delivered it today and the check is in the bank. Actually hated to see it go. One helluva great all around bike for the Colorado mountains. I'll repeat that my primary reason for selling it was the limited dealer network. When you're doing alot of touring that is a serious factor.
Can understand, but here in Colorado there aren't that many more H-D dealers than BMW... especially between the Front Range and Grand Junction. Also, if you are a BMW MOA member, one gets "The Book", basically giving you a directory of BMW owners in practically every community in the U.S. able to help you in case of need, including wrenching. Indispensable. Something H-D does not have, and come to think of it, should.
Love the GS, and it is a keeper for all the forest roads here in the Rockies, and love the H-D as well, for nothing is as sublime when cruising as it.
My R1200RT is going away soon, I just picked up my new FLHRI Road king. There is no way to compair the two so I wont but I can say that the BMW is extreemly smooth and agile and what I have noticed the most about both bikes is I seem to be excepted more on the RK, what I meen is while riding my BMER I never got waved at by bystanders or poeple in cages so, now I have to get used to riding my RK one handed most of the time
That's a real shame. That is a sweet ride. Nice photography by the way. I'm looking forward to doing just the opposite by adding a K1200GT to the family some day.
