They wouldn't give me the payoff amount over the phone, they have to mail it to me! Then they told me to walk into an office to get the payoff amount. I did, and woman in the bank told me I had to call the same number I did before. After complaining up a storm, they faxed it to me and then charged me $45!!!!! After really b****in' up a storm they removed the charge. I paid off the loan the next month and since I didn't know the exact amount, I slightly overpayed and got a refund.
Actually, I use my credit card for buying food. Hell, I use it for EVERYTHING. Then, I pay the bill in full at the end of the month. What that has done is given me an A+++ rating. When you see someone use their credit card, don't assume that they don't know what they are doing. The way I do it, ensures that my credit report stays chocked full of positive reports, as it shows a CONSISTENT ability to pay ones debts.
You have to pay it in full every month. That way you incur ZERO interest payments. Treat it the same as rent/mortagage. It MUST be paid in full.

+1 on that! I never carry cash, use plastic for everything, and it is paid in full every month.

Another plus is the perks some cards offer. My Harley Visa gives me 'Chrome Cash' that can be used at Harley Shops. My State Farm Visa gives me 'State Farm Bucks' that I can apply towards my homeowner insurance. My Shell Oil mastercard gives me Shell gas.
You can get a convenience check at 0% interest and use the funds like free money. If you put it in a CD it will be there to pay back when the 'teaser' rate expires.
Credit can get you into trouble. But if you play the game correctly, it can be worth using.
