Default New Bike

Hi everyone, I'm a PGR member and just bought my first bike, a harley sportster 883xl. I've noticed the rear exaust pipe is turning really blue up towards the rear cylinder jug and the front one is not. Wondered if someone could tell me if this is something I should be worried about. Thanks

On air cooled v-twins, the rear cylinder always wants to run leaner ( hotter ) than the front...it gets the airflow that is already heated from the front cylinder. A set of pipes, an air cleaner upgrade and a simple re-jet should help this if not eliminate it. You really do not have to do the pipes and air cleaner....but that's what makes a Harley sound like it should.....it also greatly improves performance....

Welcome to the forum. It shouldn't be too blue. I'd take it to the dealer and ask them to check the rear jug spark plug to see if it's running too hot.( the plug tip will be white in color if its running to lean and too hot) I had the 883 (see my pics) and it was a decent bike. You might want to put synthetic oil in it as it will run cooler and may be enough to solve that. I had the dealer put Syn3 oil in mine and it made a big difference in heat and smoothing out the engine. Do a search on blue pipes here and find what you need to remove the blue spots. Read the DIY section and visit the Sportster section of the tech threads. Good Luck.

My stock pipes had that same problem... The rear pipe got VERY blue... And it even heated the heatshield up enough that you could see some discoloration in the chrome... and that shield would take forever to cool down. The V&H don't seem to be having that problem.

"Blueing" can be a mark of pride amongst some riders. However, unless you've already put 1,000s of miles on it then I don't think it should be happening.

Ditto on taking her to the dealer for an EFI "check-up"!
