Here in central Texas all they use is mother nature. If the weather stays below freezing for a few days, the road stays iced over for a few days.

they could have used some of that near Appleton yesterday, quick inch of snow on warm roads followed by strong cold NW wind made glare ice lots of cars in the ditch and one guy on a honda trying to keep it upright on Hwy 15 coming from Hortonville

Yep...same thing happened here. Marshfield police officers responded to 14 crashes caused by a quick onslaught of show showers which produced black ice during an hour and a half this afternoon.

Tons of salt here. They over do it, too. They'll dump 3 times the needed amount, because their goal is to run out, so they can get more funding for next year. Last year, the first day we even got flurries, I saw 4 state highway trucks salting the same lane, all within 200 ft of each other. It's a racket. Of course, this IS Illinois.

Salt where I am now.....but when I lived in Morgantown WV up north (snowed ALOT more up there!) they used a salt/ charcoal mix. Makes for a disgusting city/ vehicle in the winter.....not that it was real clean any other season.
