last year i bought a 2005 883 xl lowrider.im 68 yrs old and this is my first harley.i havent rode for over 30 yrs.i made a few changes when i purchased this bike.one was the exhaust system,i changed to screamin eagle mufflers they were ok better than stock but still not what i was looking for as far as sound.i then purchased a set of inch and three quarter straight drag pipes and inserted the power cones in them.they are loud but still not what i want,im looking for that low rumble with backdown.i cant seem to get much help from dealers all they do is look at catalog and suggest different systems without saying they know what they sound like.and which sound the best.can someone tell me from experience what is a good system or what are good sounding mufflers to change to.would it make a difference in the straight pipes if i removed the power cones? do i really need them.since it is so expensive to rejet the carb which i had done when the screamin eagles were put on,im kinda looking to change to something i wont have to rejet carb.im now running 48 slow 180 main that was setup at the dealers when eagles were put on.any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. thanks
I have 2 inch cycle shack straight drags. They are my third set of pipes and my last set. They sound better than anything else out there. It is easy to re-jet your carb yourself. It only takes about 20 min.
68 and bought your first Harley, very cool!
If you remove the cones you would have more noise and less backpressure your bike would lose torque at the lower rpm, which is what you would want for riding on the street.
I have Cycle Shack slip on mufflers on mine and they have a low rumble to them. I think they sound much better than the SE's. They should work fine with the way you have the carb setup.
Let us know what you end up deciding and post some pictures of your ride.
First of all...I admire you! for your love of riding at 68 ....I would look in to a set of Cycle Shack Exhaust , if you like the look of the 2 " diameter style / drag pipes, with deep rumble and performance.....its the best you might find?
Try looking at there web site! and call them for your setup, you can't buy them directly from them, but Cycle Shack will tell you, where and how to get them! Also Cycle Shack used to make SE pipes for Harley the MOCO
