So basically, what you're saying is that it's best to compromise your beliefs and values just to be polite to a guy who is intent on imposing his will on you.

If you want the money, take it. If you don't, tell him no thanks and break contact. There's no reason to stick around and debate it.

Same thing you did. Politely decline it and say "I'm sure you would've done the same for me". Decline it again a second time. But if he persist and offers a third time then I'm gonna take it at that point. What you did was fine.

Once I had a guy, his truck and trailer. We drove 50 miles, loaded my harley, drove 50 miles to my house and unloaded it. I gave him $50. He said I over paided him. I told him it was worth it to me. He kept the cash. And it was worth it to me.

There's nothing wrong with how you handled it, but since you asked...
My feelings exactly...Pay it forward...

I like the pay it forward advice. I usually do something on the same lines by telling him someone is going to need his help. But if someone helps me, I always offer. People that in my opinion go beyond the call of duty and refuse, I will just shove the cash in there pocket.

The guy figured he would chip in the first twenty bucks for a defense lawyer!

Seriously, what else could you do? No big deal, the fellow actually thought your help was worth it. Hey, he got out cheap – considering what a wrecker would’ve cost him!
