Default What would you do??

Ran across a fellow rider trying to push start his harley in an alley with less that ideal pavement. After a few tries, and in first gear, he appeared tired and ready to give up. After a brief study of the whole mess, I figured I could be of some help so I offered to push while he sat on the seat holding the clutch. A good hard push in SECOND gear and the motor comes alive. I am now suddenly a hero to his lovely passenger.!

Now, what would you have done when he hands me twenty dollars. What I did was politely tell him no thanks, to be met with insistence on his part. He genuinely wanted me to have it and I genuinely wanted him to keep it. We discussed it for a good three minutes.

What would you have done?

PS. I did take the money since he was quite insistent and did not appear to back down from the issue. I had a nice dinner, he had a nice ride home.

What would you have done??????

I would have done excatly what you did. When someone is that insistent on giving you something for your trouble, its because he is grateful that you prevented a totally ruined outing.

I would have said no as you did...but in the end, when they are that hell bent on giving you what you never asked for, you really don't have a choice unless you wish to offend him in front of his passenger.

One thing I've noticed in my life... People need to get a bit better at accepting gratitude and compliments. It is somewhat annoying when an offer of gratitude is turned into a bit of a battle. It's polite to turn it down once. After that, it's far more polite to accept than to continue to attempt to turn it down.

If you feel bad about taking it, you could always drop it in some homeless person's cup, or in a Salvation Army kettle or something.

What I usually do, is tell the person the best reward for their gratitude to me would be their promise to stop and help someone in need next time they see it.

I wasn't there to see how insistent he was, but I don't think I would have taken the money under any circumstance. I'd tell him something to the effect, "Thanks, but I can't take your money bro. You can thank me by doing the same for the next rider you see by the side of the road." Then I'd walk back to my bike and leave. Even if he still doesn't "get it," I doubt he'd get off his bike and chase after you.

There's nothing wrong with how you handled it, but since you asked...
