I had a hip, femur, and knee all done at the same time in 88 (car accident). The hip was the least painful of the 3, so you shouldn't be out of commission for all that long.
88 must've been a bad year, thats when I got T-boned on my Sporty (less than 1000 miles on it) broken foot, leg, hip and some nerve damage that left my right foot pretty much useless. pieced me back together then and about 15 years later I was bone on bone also so got total hip replacement. at the time the FDA had just approved an all metal joint (the old ones have plastic socket) which is recommended for active people and I am very happy with the results. although after walking around with bone on bone any improvement would've made me happy. I exercise religiously and was lifting weights right up to a week before surgery so I healed very fast and was only off of work for 6 weeks.
one thing I'll warn about is twice during low speed maneuvers I wasn't able to get my foot off of the peg in time and ended up dropping the bike on that side but the nerve damage to my foot probably contributed to that issue.
giving up ridding was never an option. was in traction at hospital for 3 weeks and quitting never crossed my mind. Had to bungee my cane to the Sporty as soon as she was fixed.
One of my riding buddies had it done and was riding about 8 weeks later, he has done awesome. He was up and walking within a couple days. He is glad he had it done. He rides a fatty, he took it slow around the local area and once he knew no problems off he went.
I haven't had any hip surgery, but by all accounts here, sounds like the thing to do....git her done and get back in the saddle. God bless and good luck. Geezer

Howdy.
I had a total hip replacement (right side) about 1 1/2 years ago. (Degenerative arthritis) Mine was to the point that the leg bone had almost worked its way out of the socket in the pelvis. I was in terrible and constant pain. Could barely walk and lost alot of sleep due to the pain. I refused to take any pain killers ... too darned tough for that - just curled up into a fetal position and whimpered alot! lol
Upon waking from the surgery (which took all of about 1 1/2 hours total) I immediately noticed a big difference. Surgery was at 7:30am on a Wednesday, and I was up and walking by 3:00pm that afternoon with only moderate pain. By the next morning (Thursday) I got up and walked 1 mile (according to nurses, 17 laps around the nurses station was exactly 1 mile). Went home Friday afternoon and 5 weeks later started pretty intense therapy. It took about 12 weeks and I was back to running, hiking, martial arts training, gold dredging - all the things I couldn't do for the past 5 years. After about 6 months I felt better than I have for years!
The hip is better than new, and to this day - NO PAIN!
Good luck and I hope yours turns out as well as mine did! I would definately do it again, and in fact I will be, as the left hip is going out now and will need replacing. Looks like in a few years I'll be making laps around the nurses again!
Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. Be glad to help out and answer any questions if you have any.
Hey there ...I started riding in spring of 2000....I had hip problems but nothing that kept me from riding....I knew a total hip replacement was in mu future...in Sept of 2001 went on the Oyster Run.....pulled into a gas station to fill up and as I put my foot down I knew immediately that my leg would not support my bike, a sportster at that time, and down I went....well I went in and had my "Bionic Hip" done in Dec 2001....got back on my sporty 6 weeks later as soon as I was off crutches and cleared to drive my car...ooooops...called the doctor to confirm that I was cleared to ride the bike....seems I jumped the gun by 6 weeks.....so I waited another 6 weeks and haven't stopped since.....I now ride and '08 Deluxe that has over 13,000 miles on it! So go for the surgery...my only regret was waiting so long in so much pain that I had NO hip joint by the time I had it done. By the way...I am a female so if I can do it, so can you! PJ
