I have the Smart Siren 2 w/ pager and Love it. If sombody just bumps it it tells me. Great for road trips. Thieves wil often bump a bike to see what happens. When a guy w/ a gun comes out to inspect, I assume they move onto a new target. I have not had this happen yet however.
I installed the Smart Siren II into my RK about a month ago and also have the Pager II which I purchased from Zannotti's. I walked quite a ways down my street with my bike in my garage to test the range and was still receiving the signal. It is supposed to have a range of 1/2 mile but I'm sure that is line of sight. I probably walked about 2 long blocks away from the bike. I will have to see how far it will reach one of these days. So far it seems to work great and was an easy install into the security system which was on my RK from the factory.
The range could be better. On the old versions (Thunder pager) you could hook the sending unit to your am-fm radio with a Y plug from Radio Shak to add to the range.. You could also install an on off switch on the siren to give you an element of surprise (you can't do that with the smart siren). Range was a 1/2 mile or better with that setup but when your a half mile away and it goes off, and your to old & fat to run to your scoot, what goods it gonna do you.
I've been using a pager since 02 and wouldn't be without it. When I stop at a hotel I ask for a room close to the ground floor & close to a door that exits to the parking lot. I ask (tell) the clerk I'll be parking my bike right outside the my window. I put the generic cover on the bike, put a disc lock on it, lock the steering & set the alarm. When I hit the sack I set the pager on the window sill and the 2" snubby on the night stand. Sleep allot better with that pager setup.
Two years ago at a Holiday Inn in Myrtle Beach the alarm went off at about 3:00am. Looked out & saw two guys near my bike. I called the desk & got no answer. Called 911 & two deputies were detailed.Went outside to watch these clowns until the police arrived. Turns out they were drunk & fighting and one of them fell against my bike. They had moved the fight away from my bike by the time I got outside. The night clerk? She was already outside trying to breakup the fight between her boyfriend and the crack dealer she had given a free room to.
I'm a retired LEO & carry concealed always but I'm not John Wayne.... Had they been trying to take the bike I would have made my presence known, but under the circumstances waiting for assistance seemed prudent. Holiday Inn basically told me "Sorry about your bad luck" when I bttched about getting woke up in the middle of the night because of their night clerk.
$60 ? The same unit here (UK) is around $425 with the pager and sender unit which is a rip off, However I bought mine from Dudley Perkins when I was in San Fransisco last year along with a shed load of other stuff but it was still $103.
I think it is good but the range is low so it limits you to how far you can wander off from the bike approx 400 yards or so but thats a long way to run when when it goes off and any further and the bike will be gone !
Be advised the battery in the unit only lasts about 48 hours. Carry spares. I am headed to Laughlin for the River Run and will put in a fresh battery when I park the bike the first time.
They take a 2450 disc battery, buy them at Wal-Mart.
Correct! I turn my pager off when I don't expect to use it to conserve the battery. Dead batter = useless hunk of plastic.
Push and hold the button on the pager to turn on/off. On full time it will waste the battery after a while. (edited to answer the above question). My battery in the pager lasted a couple of weeks when on all the time.
