If you stop to wait to make a left hand turn and you are close to the yellow line then you are at risk of being hit by the oncoming traffic coming from the opposite direction.

If you stay to the right then the idiot who trys to go around you on the right runs the risk of either hitting you or cleaning out the ditch.

I like to stay centered in the middle of my lane. Saw a clown go flying around me on the right once. He was headed for the gutter. I didn't bother to say hi to him. I just laughed.

No matter what you do, keep in mind that all people want to do is get around you. They have to pass you for some crazy reason. Thats the way it is when you are on a bike. I had a guy try to pass me once on a double yellow line as I was headed off an on-ramp. He didn't even give me a chance to get on the road. I decided that he wasn't going to pass me so I poured the coal to the ironhead. We had a knock-down, *****-out, drag race for about 50 yards. I won. It was impossible for him to pass me after that so I slowed down to about 40 mph for the next 15 miles.

Score one for us bikers.

Whatever you do decide to do, which will be at that particular moment and not now while you are reading this...Do what you can to MAKE SURE that the vehicle coming up on your azz sees that you intend to turn long before you even get to that turn.

The idiots behind you are gonna have to deal with it and wait like everyone else would for a left turner.
I agree claim your lane. I tend to sit mostly in the center while making a lt turn. I think that you are more visable then closer to the center lane. Cars coming up behind my not distinguish you from on coming traffic. Just remember they are out to get you and you will be ready

Keep your front wheels straight until you start moving. So that if someone is coming up on your rear too fast you can easily accelerate straight ahead and cross the intersection (traffic permitting). This way you have kept an out of the way route.

When stopping behind cars at a traffic light I try to stop at slight angle so that if I have to I can shoot into the space between cars to keep from getting rear ended.
