Is the tax you will pay on an outright bike purchase, or is there a trade in? Figure what your total tax is, and subtract that from the MSRP. That is the amount "off" MSRP the dealer is actually giving you as the dealer has the option of (and most already do) not charging for the others costs you have listed. If the difference amount is not at least $1000 to $1500, then it is not a good deal. If so, tell the dealer he can sweeten your desire to buy the bike if he throws in parts and labor for a few accessories or clothing up to the amount off MSRP (why not start at a value of $2000 under MSRP) you want (not giving you 15-20% discount) at no (as in $0) charge for those items or associated labor.

Good luck!

+1

If you have a fair deal, the costs associated with finding a better deal may not be worthwhile in the long run. There is also value in establishing a good relationship with a dealership that you like and that is close to you.

I can't get any of the dealers I contacted to budge on MSRP. The best they can do is not charge me the freight and setup cost.

I'm also hearing on the forums that other parts of the nation are offering under MSRP, but not sure if they are adding the freight and setup cost back into MSRP. 20% off accessories and apparel seems normal and there's a few dealers that offer the discount to anyone.

As for me, I refuse to pay MSRP in this market. I also refuse to finance. Add the interest to the bike loan, and you'll have a very expensive bike.

As for the dealership relationship...hmmm....I never maintained a relationship with a dealer whenever I bought a vehicle. Besides, as long as I have money to spend on something they are selling, I have no doubt they will ALWAYS want to form a relationship with me.

I'm saying a big "NO!" for going into debt for toys.

it all depends on where you are located. the dealers here in norther NJ where doing the same thing. until recently there was one last dealer that was holding on to the past. that one finally gave in as well. guess they forgot about that big mortgage harley made all the dealers get a while back to make all the dealers bigger and better.

I can't imagine any dealer not cutting deals in this economy. like I said before around here 10-20% off MSRP this might change when spring rolls around and the fever kicks in but no one will pay MSRP around here. not to mention this is a very rich area (New York New Jersey tri-state)

I bought my eg/classic...$1000.00 under msrp and saved $325.00 on ship/prep....Look in the paper/news the economy is in deep sh-t.....why would you want to pay full price....for anything.....I think the best place to buy a bike would be Detroit....who's buying when you don't have a job....dealer's are still calling me....
