If you already have boots, and they don't have Gore-Tex in them, I would use sno-seal. But you can only apply it to smooth leather, not for use on suede.

Sno-Seal is great and what I used to use for hunting until Gore-Tex came out. Use small quantities and rub it into the boot. I used to use a lighter (carefully so not to scorch the leather) to melt it into the leather and seams.

+1 on the sno seal. I use an old toothbrush to get it along and into the stitching were the sole and upper meet and the use a blowdryer. You can get a couple of coats on in no time. Then do it on occasion to keep them waterproofed

Vaseline petroleum jelly; apply, let sit for an hour, wipe off excess.

For leather boots, I recommend Nikwax. It has been around for ever and if you follow the instruction it works as well as Beeswax or Bear Grease. You can buy it online at REI or EMS.

I love the remark about plastic bags...

Gore-Tex is the way to go!
Have run the plastic bags before, always used to have a couple of used bread bags in my jacket, just in case mother nature wanted to rain on my parade!
