I would take a serious look at the Road King Standard with ABS

What he said.

Here's my two cents. I have had both softails and touring framed bikes. In fact. I currently have one of each. I can tell you that if you are going to carry a passenger, and put even a moderate amount of miles behind you, then there is no choice but a touring based HD. Not everyone will agree, but the Road King is about the best all around bike in the lineup IMHO. You can even add a clip on fairing for those cold days.

As you can see, I might be a little biased on my opinion.

I had an 02 heritage classic and it was an excellent bike...you can't go wrong with that choice

People are gonna have their opinions, and their opinions will likely correlate with the bike they own

Here's some "neutral" advice:

--Go with with what you like (make three choices)

--Ask what your wife/parner likes (make three choices)

--Go with what is common and cheapest, so you can add modifications that WORK FOR YOU (when people do that, the Heritage usually comes out on top for most people who are committed to riding two-up)

But before you pull the trigger, understand the difference between an FX softail and an FL softail. That knowledge may change your mind or even force you to consider a Road King (or other Touring bike).

Ride if possible. To me, the Softail Custom is a totally different bike than a Heritage.

BTW.....I also rented a Road King and a Street Glide, and prefered the Softail of the 3. They were all about the same price, the Heritage and Road King were equal in price and the Street Glide was about 1000 bucks more.

+1, I did the same & look at my sig. The Heritage is a great all in one bike. If you plan to log mostly highway miles, then a tour model may be a better fit. The Hertage or Deluxe are great choices.
