"I would try to plan that trip w/o interstates,"

Am going to do that as much as practical in New Mexico. Having been through OK and TX extensively, at this point I think I want to get through them as quick as possible and save time for the "new" stuff. However, that could change!

How far is it from Las Cruces to Tucson?

From looking at the map, I think I'll aim for Amarillo or just past it on day one. (If I'm still feeling pretty good... may go a bit further. We see the stretch between eastern OK and Amarillo pretty often. Nothing "new" to see.)

Day two I'll take my time across New Mexico. I want to be able to start fairly early on day two and ENJOY New Mexico from the eastern line to Las Cruces, via Roswell, Ruidoso, Alamagordo, and may spend the night in Las Cruces.

Wednesday it will be Las Cruces to Tucson.

HOWEVER... I need to be careful to NOT strictly schedule myself. (I have a tendency to do that when doing a cage trip.)

Unfortunately, though, there will have to be a bit of schedule and structure... I only have so much time to do this. UNLESS... I leave on Sunday instead of Monday.... hmmmmmm.....
Amarillo to Cruces about 7-8 hrs non stop. Cruces to Tucson about 6 hrs. You will have some wide open roads, 4 lane, from Amarillo to Tucson. Not too many places to stay once you get out of Amarillo until you get to Clovis. Clovis has a nice HD store when you come into town on the right. You will have a lot of high desert riding, really nice thru the Hondo valley, remember John Wayne. Ruidoso is nice, if you have the time, take the trip thru the side road to Cloudcroft and then into Alamagordo. Cloudcroft to Cruces about 2 1/2 hrs with fuel stop in Alamo. No fuel between Alamo and Cruces. You could spend the night around the HD store, Barnetts, lots of motels and eating places. As time gets near PM me and I will let you know my schedule. If you have questions give me a shout. Jim

Sorry so long in getting back to this... my 'puter was down for a few days.

Anyhoo:

Some things are changing:

* Due to some schedule conflicts, target week is now third week of June. (Wife/her brother are to purchase tickets within the next few days... once that is done, this date will a "given".)

* I am hoping to beat the other guys to the above date on the vacation calender in the morning.

* I have decided to leave one day earlier (i.e. Sunday AM instead of Monday AM). Reason? Easy: MORE TIME TO ENJOY! Tentative "schedule" of sorts...

Sunday: Looking to make the trek across OK/TX post haste and get as close to NM as I can. No real sight seeing (seen that area many, many times)... just MAKE MILES and get closer to NM.

Monday: Make a relaxed trip down to and through Roswell... then take several "scenic" detours once in the mountains around Ruidosa and Cloudcroft. May end up at Las Cruces that night OR... stay in the mountains. Haven't decided... may not decide until there.

Tuesday: Pick up where ever I left off on Monday, meandering my way over the mountains toward Silver City and where ever else strikes my fancy. Intend to finish this day on or near the AZ line.

Wednesday: Finish the run to Tucson. Visit with relatives that evening.

Thursday: Visiting along with eating Sonoran Mexican food at my favorite cantena in Tucson.

Friday: Hit the road and make about 500 miles. No real scenic detours... need to make some miles now.

Saturday: Same as Friday!

Sunday: Finish up the 200-250 miles that remain and spend the rest of the day/evening as downtime before back to work on Monday.

Sooo... IF I can beat the others to the vacation calender in the morning... this looks to be a "go".

I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!

LAMing, dude you crack me up! You are just like me before any road trip. Excited to beat all hell. Things to do,things to pack, etc, etc, etc, etc. I'm happy for you, bro. You will have an epic time. Don't let anything or anyone drown that child-like enthusiasm. I'm exactly the same way on my trips. Nothing gets me down, and I can never wait til the day I leave. I usually won't sleep much the night before...too excited. Just like Xmas Eve, birthday, and 1st ride of the season...all rolled into one.

Good luck and ride safe!!!!!!

Thanks for the words of encouragement Fujilicious. After 40 years of biking... I STILL get excited about riding. Many have been the times before a big trail ride I was going on, or some event that I was to ride in, that I couldn't sleep too good!

I fully expect the night before the Sunday departure to be a loooooooong night. Shoot... maybe I need to leave Saturday afternoon and go ahead and get it started?????
