Coordinate with the American Cancer society folks who you will be giving the donation to - they might provide you with some support. I did one for the local USO last year and they gave us some burgers and dogs for the end of ride cookout plus they had a bunch of stuff they gave away to the riders.

Don't try to organize it all by yourself - too much stress and running around. Get a few others to help and divvy up the tasks of getting it put together.

Get the advertising flyers out early and in lots of places - gives folks plenty of time to hear about it and arrange schedules so they can show up. Make sure you get flyers at all the bike shops in the area and while you're there ask them if they would like to donate any items to use as prizes - if they do make sure they get mentioned at the event for doing it.

Do a pre ride of your planned route - preferably under the same type of traffic conditions to be expected on event day. This gives you an approximate time that it will take folks to complete it.

Have good maps/directions to the stops to hand out at the start point. Makes the ride more enjoyable when folks know where to go and aren't worrying about missing a turn. Makes sure all stops are well marked so they don't ride past and have to double back.

I'm sure others will have more advice but these are some of the things that I remember from past runs and the one I set up.

First thing is to call all local dealers with-in 100 miles and make sure you are not scheduling the same day they are. Keep things as simple as you can, a shot ride (remember people riding long distance to your event) and plenty of door prizes. Don't be afraid to get out and beg, most dealers will donate items for you to give away. Alway worry about the weather, but there is nothing you can do about it. Have fun, but don't expect too much for your first year.

Curious why you say that. We sponsored a run a few years ago that was public parks and sandwich shops and less than ten people showed up. For the next one we went back to the "bar hopper" and had over ninety.

One poker run I went on it rained most of the time riding. Good turn out though. Got back to turn our cards in and they were selling tickets and giving out 5 cards at a time to anyone who rode or not. Now I didn't complain to them, it was for a good cause, but if it does rain I would suggest to just keep the poker part for riders only. Have something separate for the bar patrons.

Not knocking the charity but you do realize that over 70% of their donations go to administrative cost and not to the research to prevent or cure cancer.

The American Heart Assoc does the same thing.

If you want, i can send you a site that lists the charities and what percentage of donations goes to the actual patient, research, treatment, etc...

I have put on a big event for the last five years and have some knowledge of what I said above before anyone tries to flame me.
