I am heading up to Chicago for a conference and want to ride up, I am in Corpus Christi, and was thinking about maybe doing this? what all does it entail, I know you ahve to go 1000 miles in 24hrs or something like that.
1000miles in 24 hrs but it gets a little more complecated then that...you can't leave the bike more than a few mins and need to get peeps to sign this sheet with phone numbers so that they can validate your receits and claim
They also confirm the mileage via mapping programs, so try to get a gas reciept near any major road changes. Also ride more than 1000 miles, to insure that you get credit. There may be a discrepency between your calcs and theirs, and their calculations are the OFFICIAL ones.
If you just want the cert, there are usually several "official" ss1000 staged across the country each year, leave a location proceed to point B, then C, then D and return to point A. with mandatory check ins along the route (at major route changes)
Pay the fee. I can't believe they actually check or send anyone's money back.
From what I hear there is a big backlog because they DO check. Seems pretty well regulated from what I see. Me and some members of the CVMA will be doing one in June. I've ridden 1000 in a day but that was before the Iron Butt started. I was a lot younger then so this ought to be a test.

You have 24 hrs to complete the ride. If you average 50 mph that would give you 4 hrs to gas up, eat and ****. If you get 38 mpg you'd need to stop 6 times (171 miles between stops), but I'll figure 7 stops. That would give you 34 minutes at each stop. If you fueled and didn't f#%K around at some of those stops, you'd have enough time saved up to stop for a real meal along the way.
I've made the 892 miles from home to Daytona in less than 15 hrs several times, 19 hrs on the worse trip (with food stops). Even at 19 hrs, that would have left me 5 hrs to pack in the extra 108 miles needed for the Iron Butt.

I have done one, you can leave the bike for 23 hours and 59 mins if you want, that is if you can do 1000 miles in a min.
