Default Filter question

was thinking of running amsoil with their filter,and they claim it is good for up to 10,000 miles or 1 yr.Has anyone out there that runs amsoil and filter ever run a filter that long. Thanks for your help

Remember that old commercial...

or you can pay me later.

I could care less what the independent tests show. I change oil and filter every 2500 to 3000 miles and primary and tranny every 10,000 miles. I put about 25,000 a year on my 2 to 3 bikes so every winter the tranny fluid gets dumped regardless. I also switch out the brake fluid and flush the lines in the winter and replace with new silicone fluid.

I agree, 3000 is the limit on oil and never change oil without changing the filter.

They guarantee them for the same distance you run their oil, which is 2x the OEM recommended interval. Apparently Harley may even recommend farther using synthetic oil and where they do the max is 20,000 miles or one year.
Now does anybody do that? Not many. I wouldn't do it without sending in an OA sample to see how it's performing. My personal comfort level is 7500 miles, anything beyond I'd be testing at least once to see where I'm at.

I run Mobil 1 20-50 syn. and follow the MoCo service interval recommendation which is 5k. Never believed those extended intervals put out by Amsoil and other syn manufacturers.

I am an Amsoil dealer and I use the oil in all my vehicles, 1 car, 1 truck, two bikes. I will not use their filters in my vehicles. They may be fine but if you cut one open you will find them pretty flimsy compared to other makes. I use K& N.

Default Extended Oil

I am using synthetic oils in the scoot but solely for the reason that they have the well documented ability to handle higher temps than conventional oil which is important to me in our high temp air cooled engines. It is an additional layer of security for the health of the engine that I like to have.

I've never really understood the claims by the synthetic manufacturers of extended oil change intervals. I realize and agree that the synthetics will not break down as fast as the conventionals so theoretically could go longer but who would want to put that black dirty oil back in the engine if they could magically wave a wand and renew the lubricating properties. It still has a lot of particulates in it that are too small for the filter to remove yet can do long term wear. So to me, I don't care if the oil could last for 100,000 miles, unless they can figure out a way to keep the oil clean as well as extend the lubricating properties, it's a moot point.

I've been using Mobile One 15W-50 in the motor. My riding is all freeway commuting on my one hour trip to work each way. I change it every 5k along with the filter (H-D Premium). I don't think I'd go 10k on any oil in the motor generally speaking, but that's just me. Maybe under the most ideal circumstances you could (all interstate cruising for example on a BIG road trip). But what I'd do if I did squeak 10k out of an oil is I'd change the FILTER along the way. Just swap it out with a new one and add a few ounces of oil again. That gets the dirt-laden filter out of there and you're now filtering with a fresh filter. Again this is if I was on say an 8 week cross country road trip that was pretty much continuous riding. I think that would be OK with Amsoil or Mobile One IMHO.

Oil just isn't that expensive nor that difficult to change to push beyond 5k if you ask me.

Alot depends on your type or riding. There are conditions that are HARD on a vehicle (alot of stop n go or frequent very short trips for example where the motor never or rarely warms up to full temperature) and there are conditions that are far more "ideal" for a vehicle (long distance freeway cruising for example).

My commute is nearly ideal in terms of this. I get on the freeway and cruise at 75 for an hour til I get to my exit ramp where I work. I exit and go about 2 miles and I'm in the underground parking lot at work for the day. At the end of the day its the exact reverse - 75 mph for an hour then 2 miles to my house and into the garage she goes. I rarely touch my brake and oftentimes dont even have to shift out of 6th gear except at the very beginning and very end of my commute.

My last bike had 60k on the brakes and they had lots of pad left. The point is alot depends on your riding conditions. But still I'd say 5k is a good marker for changing it. If you ride in poor/harsh conditions then I'd do it at 3k...

They are probably accurate when just referring to the oil itself. The problem comes from the accumulation of unfriendly deposits and contaminants as well as possibility of moisture that will be mixed with the oil long before the oils capability to lubricate ceases.
