I call them engine guards for two reasons: 1. I'm too superstitious to call them "crash guards" -- don't like the karma; and 2. They will protect your engine and not much more if you have to lay the bike down.

They'll do what their designed to do, just don't expect them to do more.

Darkwater, congrats on the Sporty. You'll be suprised at how your bicycle riding skills will help you in your motoring skills. I rode mountain bikes for years and when I took my cycling classes I was surprised what skills I had. Especially manuvering. In fact I too started on a Sporty and am now the proud owner a a bigass Fat boy. I too am quickly becomming a bigass fat boy. LOL. My *** only sees the mtn. bike a few times a year. Harley,Giant,Harley,Giant? You get it.

I have seen 3 accidents where the crash bars have saved the legs of motorcyclists. All three were from people shoving a motorcycle and rider into guardrails on freeways. You'd be suprised how much that little round tube can do when it comes to a crash.
I'm glad to hear that they helped those people. Unfortunatly, having a brother and friends that are LEO's, I've seen pics of what they can also DO to the legs of riders. [:'(]

I've got them on my Heritage Classic. Like the looks and like the fact that I can put my feet up to give my legs and back a break on longer trips. But I'm well aware of what can happen if my legs get trapped in them if a cager and I get to know each other a little to well on the road.

Rick
I'll second you on this one. I've got a wonderful scar on my shin from when a crash bar pinned my leg against the brake pedal. Went all the way to the bone, filled my boot up with blood before I could say. "Dang, that hurts!", and happened in the middle of some serious boonies along the Powder River in Wyoming. Never no mo' crash bars on any bike I own, nope, nyet, nada!

Thanks to everyone for their comments. Yesterday I put a deposit on the bike and decided to have the crash bars added, along with SE pipes.

The rather trimmed down sporty crash bars are not too unsightly, and the look might grow on me. If not, I'll sell them in due time. First, however, I need to ride around the block a few times and build a little confidence. Also, I like the idea of the crash bars providing a measure of protection in case some a$$hole, accidently or not, knocks my bike over.

Again, many thanks gentlemen for the advice.
