Default Heal/toe shifter loose?

I have noticed that my heal-toe shifter rattles quite a bit in the rougher RPM ranges of my 2001 Road King. I can silence it by lightly placing my boot along one of the pegs or its arm.

A closer surface inspection reveals that the vertical shifter arm (one that comes out of the trans) really vibrate. Being that I am only learning my Harley mechanics, how "loose" should I expect those arms to be? What would I focus on to reduce the problem?

Sounds like one of the joints might be coming apart. Replace it with a linkage with heim joints before it fails and you get stuck somewhere.

Last time I tightened my shifter I used some thread locker on it and then put one wrap of safety wire around the nut and anchored the nut so it couldn't vibrate loose. That was 4 yrs ago and it's still nice and tight.

Have dealer replace it. It's a three hour job to pull the side covers to get room to replace the linkage arm go into trans. You can try to get tight but it will keep working off. Good time to have chrome parts replace same labor.

When that happened to me it was a combination of the shaft was worn as well as the threading inside the actual front shifter. Being on the road at the time and for a temporary relief I swapped the back one to the front. Over the winter I replaced all components. The 2 shifters and the shaft. I bought the bike used and I suspect the previous owner crushed the shifter every time he shifted not reliazing it dosen't take that much pressure to shift and in fact over time accesive force use will accelerate the deteriation of the grooves in the shifter and on the spline.

You are riding it too much. Buy some chrome and then get some polish and just clean it in the the driveway and it will go allot longer without stuff coming loose.

I'd say that your preventative maintenance sucks!

There is more to maintaining a bike than changing the oil and waxing it.

Well, the Road King is new-to-me and I have only been behind its handlebars since the beginning of April. Any lack of preventative maintenance lies on the shoulders of the previous owner.

However, last night I did some work on the shifting linkage. This morning, the rattling is completely gone. The vibration still exists but appears to be greatly reduced to something more in line with what I would expect from a Harley.
