Default Questiona bout the possible CA motorcycle SMOG program...

I was having lunch with a friend and my dad yesterday. My dad knows several of the local sheriff's quite well from city council meetings he attends for work. They started talking about the "motorcycle noise" issue as this is in Malibu where people pay inordinate amounts of money to life away from the noise and crowds of the "city."

This officer insists that starting in 2012 that all motorcycles regardless of they year are going to have to have catalytic converters on them. Now my bike is a 2002. I do not believe that my bike came with a catalytic converter. Correct me if I am wrong. It is also my opinion that this officer only has part of the story as his concern is only noise.

My opinion on this whole BS situation is that it will not pass but a few "celebrity" types and a lot of local wealthy businessmen and such will put in as much effort as they can.

The reality of the situation is that the amount of pollution created by a motorcycle is so miniscule compared to that of a car that is it not even funny. Besides the fact that the real motivation for this bill is more money for the failing or shall I say failed state government, and possibly to control the "noise." I think a bill should be introduced to ban boom boom steros in car and they should have to pay. This is freakin' rediculous.

I couldn't agree more, I heard it was some $hit for brains from Beverly Hill that wrote the bill, I'm hoping it goes down in flames

The officer doesn't know what's going or not going to happen in 2012. And if your bike didn't come with a catalytic converter, you won't be required to put one on.

Motorcycles in general MAY someday be required to come with a catalytic converter but no one knows that for sure, not even a cop.

And for the record, a catalytic converter isn't going to make a difference in noise anyway.

I just read an article that explains a bit more about this. Apparently motorcycles pollute more than cars, however our numbers are so few compared to other vehicles on the road we have been able get out of it thus far.

What the story fails to mention is that compared to other vehicles, motorcycle pollution is basically insignificant, meaning if all motorcycles were taken off the road, the world would not see any "measurable" change in pollution or the environment.

No way can they make bikes that never originally came equipped with a Cat Conv install one. But they can enforce original equipment items that it should have - intake/exhaust items.

Something's fishy. There were no Cat Conv in 2002. Aftermarket vs stock exhaust, same pollution. Cat's didnt start in CA until 2006 I think. Maybe the "Noise Whiners" are really behind this B.S.

Our phucked up politicians are just finding any avenue for state funds.
They have already raised the state tax.I heard vehicle registrations will increase. This smog program is just a way for the state to make more money,IMO.

Cats would only be req'd on models that came equipped with them.

My 06 1200C had cats on it. Only year for sporties for 50 States . Just bought a $125 buck lawn mower. Stated on the box not for sale in Cal. The Cal model must have cats. Wonder if weed wackers in Cal have cats.
