Default exhaust "sniffed"?????

I emailed a nearby Harley service dept. about getting my Dyna dyno tuned. They suggested that I get my exhaust "sniffed" first, then they can recommend what to do. What is this??? Searching this forun yielded nothing.

Thanks,
Larry

Try emailing them back and asking them....I assume they know.

That's when you remove the air filter, fart in the throttle body, then quickly drop to your knees and sniff the exhaust.

Sorry, I couldn't help it.

It's when they measure the Air-Fuel ratio AFAIK, But why wouldn't they do that as they were dyno tuning it?

They're tellin' ya, to go to someone who has the 'analyzing' equipment. Some peeps 'round here, that do dyno work, have it (BUT not all, in fact, FEW is more like it.)
They stick a sampling tube, into the exhaust pipe. It draws in the exhaust, and analyzes it for CO, CO2, etc. Using that data, they can then determine, what adjustments to make to your EFI or carb, etc.
In reality, TMK, it is the only way to really dial it in.
Those of you, living in 'smog control' states, should be familiar with this, IF not, you will be 'chortly'. Think air quality, Climate Change and BIG BROTHER!!!! Jack Butts!!!

Course, you could jus' git 4 or 5 of your buds over, fire it up, and then everyone stand behind it, and SNIFF. YEP, she's burnin' rich, I can smell it. BUT clear your 'sniff' palates with a case of Michelob (or your favorite brand), FIRST!!!! You will attain MUCH BETTA results. Not sure the scoot will run any better, BUT, GOOD results.

Thanks for your reply Da Gumpmeister. Sounds like that might be a good thing to have done. I will let all know the results.

Sounds like whoever you got the response from doesn't know jack. Sniffing the exhaust while running through the entire RPM range (that's done on a dyno), is the only accurate way to know what needs to be adjusted.

Unless of course you're using the "seat of your pants" method, which doesn't use a sniffer other than maybe your nose.
