What did I do wrong?
I am not much of a mechanic but all these threads about doing your own mods got me inspired. I wanted to install a power outlet / cigarette lighter - mainly so I can power my Tom Tom. I wired it to plug into the battery tender pigtail. The cigarette lighter works fine but when I plugged in the Tom Tom power adapter -smoke started coming out of the outlet and the adapter was very hot. Everything still works (I checked the adapter by plugging it into the car outlet). What did I do wrong?

The cigarette lighter didn't care which part of the socket was positive and negative, the TomTom did. You probably have the socket wired backwards. The bottom center of the socket should be positive, the outer shell negative.
