Maybe this horse has been whipped before but My best freind ,who now lives about 100 miles from me, and always wants to go riding together, often gets in a mood where he wants to slow down and count the trees or something! Last year I got into and argument with him when we were far from home ,it got dark and we asked a woman at a gas station on another bike if she was going towards QC. and knew the way. Ya she said follow me. it's 50 mph limit and she's driveing about 60 ,but my budd wants to drive 45 mph! and straggles off behind in the dark in unknown parts! I was really embarrassed. i didn't want to scoot off and leave him , but felt bad because this chick who was helping us had to wait at the next town, and to my surprise she did!
Now here is my problem. I spoke to him a few times on this subject and he still seems to think we can ride together but he can just slow down and fall a mile behind and that should be ok.
I told him , and he just finished taking his course and test for his mc driver's license, that for safety he has to stay close and if a car is going to pass let him pass us both but don't allow room for a car to get between us ,next there is 2 cars then three and were totally separated and thus breaking the safety of travelling in group. Plus what if I let him straggle back and he breaks down or worse (touch wood) gets in an accident? What an hour later I'll turn around to go find him? Or if I come to an inersection and want to turn and then have to pull over and wait for him to come putt putting along? I think that's wrong , but he still seems to think it's ok to do whatever he wants.
The dillema= he has been bugging me to go on a 1200 mile week-end trip soon and I want to go because Gaspe region of QC. is supposed to be gorgeous, but the only thing stopping me is I don't want to ride 35-40 mph in 50-55 mile zones because my budd wants to watch the grass growing on his suzuki drz 400 GS stlye bike. I'm telling you this frustrates me to the point I'm blown away.
Are my tighty whitey's on too tight or would you guys accept this behaviour. ?

It sounds like he is riding at a level that he is comfortable with. If that is the case, you, being the alledged better rider should slow down to his pace, or choose not to ride with him instead of asking him to have to push his limits to keep up.
So he just took the class? Is he new to riding? If so maybe it's a confidence issue and he needs more saddle time to feel comfortable flying down the road. If not, I would feel the same as you. Maybe you can invite some others and make sure one of them is a slow poke too. That way he won't be alone as he lags behind.

I agree totally, thing is he insists he can keep up and he is the one instigating the trip. He called me again last night ! And yet he'll just dissapear every now and then , and I'm staying close to the speed limit anyway. not Like i'm speeding along at break-neck velocity!

He took the class and rode all last summer and did the test this year and passed a month ago.

+1.
To add maybe you two need to plot better trips. You two might want to take into consideration time of day, traffic, and knowledge of the area.
Why dontcha let him take the lead? It may push him to go quicker and also let you see what mistakes he is making as a beginner. Helping him out with technique will make him better, safer, and faster

OH true that, but when I let him lead ,and I want him to for the experience, he forgets I'm there! Sometimes I nearly run right up his butt because suddenly he's going slow without warning . I told you have to signal me if you turn or slow down and he says WHY? Last year it started rainng once so i stopped to get geared up-him in the lead- I caught right up , beeped him signaled him he just kept going. So I stop and and change gloves and put tape around my ankles and next thing he is just gone
Lucky he drives so slow I caught up ten minutes later,he didn't notice I was gone!
My own common sense is to let him go on the trip alone, but i would like to go,and don't have that many other freinds who ride.
I would just ride with him and map out check points, if you get separated then you just hook up at the next check point. A ride is a ride, enjoy it! I love blastin' through the back roads, but more and more I find my self at the end of the trail not having seen much of anything and wish I had slowed down to check out the surroundings, especially if I have not traveled that road before.

Just ride. If he wants to hang back, that's his business. You ride your own ride, and let him ride his.
I had a brother-in-law that refused to get on any highway when we rode together. So one day I got tired of babying him and said, see ya at the house and hit the highway. I was just finishing up a good steak when he finally showed up.
