Garmin Nuvi 255W, think it was $100 at WalMart. Perfectly waterproof with the addition of a ziploc baggie slipped over the top. Put it on a RAM mount for $50, works great, even in direct sunlight.
I, along with several friends, just use a regular Garmin windshield mount stuck to the windshield. As a safety net, I used a piece of parachute cord between the mount and windshield bag in case the mount decided to let go. However, it never has.
Honestly never thought of that (dope slap to forehead...)
Ordered a new Garmin Nuvi 760 for $189 delivered from Amazon.com yesterday. I see they are up to $199 now, but still a great deal. Will just leave it in my pocket in case I get lost during my back road wanderings. I'm thinking mounting it on the bars would be too distracting for me, plus My bike would probably shake it apart.

I have the nuvi 760 on my bike and there's no problems. I bought the "ball and socket" type mount from eBay and hard wired the power connector to my ignition switch. Works great!

I have that same mount and used it this weekend with my Garmin NUVI 265T. It worked fantastic. This is an excellent mount for 29 bucks. Looks sharp on the bike too. I use the normal plug in for the cigarette lighter too. I will never ride on a long trip without it again.
Here is the link to the mount

Looks great. I'm gonna order one. How wide is the base thingy? Hopefully I have enought straight area on my bars.
Funny...in my part of the country, USGS maps are better than GPS, at least when I go dual-sporting on the KLR.
So I have an old Army compass, printed maps from GoogleMaps and/or GoogleEarth in a ziploc, and a 7.5" USGS map in my old waterpof Army mapcase. And a watch.
For road trips on the HD, I have my Google directions, compass, road map, and.........
.......I can almost always find another HD rider at a gas station who has a GPS
