Default Budget GPS?

I read an article recently about a guy who mounted a Garmin 2610 (refurbished, bought at low price) on his sportbike and was very pleased with its performance, and it made me wonder about others who have taken a similar approach.

Have you successfully (or not) mounted a low-budget GPS on your HD? If so, I'd like to know what unit and how it was mounted.

Thanks in advance!

I bought a Gramin Quest a couple of years ago for well under $200 (refurbished by TigerDirect). I used a Ram Mount to mount to my bike and bought a cigarette lighter adapter from Radio Shack to power it. I am very happy with it.

I use the included Garmin Mapquest software to build routes on my PC and download the routes to the GPS. I think this ability is crucial. On my bike, I care as much about what route I take to get somewhere as actually getting there... In my cage, I just want to get there...

To be honest, I am loooking at the new Garmin Zumo 660 but the $700 exceeds my toy allowance!

I, along with several friends, just use a regular Garmin windshield mount stuck to the windshield. As a safety net, I used a piece of parachute cord between the mount and windshield bag in case the mount decided to let go. However, it never has.

Another option might be this... A new company bought the rights to the Circuit City website circuitcity.com and has put the website back up. They have reconditioned Garmin Zumi's that have been reconditioned by the factory. I bought a Nuvi 760 for $190, they also have Nuvi 750's for $150. When I received mine it looked brand new and it has the capability to download routes from the Harley route planner. I thought that was a pretty good deal.

Magellan Roadmate got it on sale at the PX. Using velcro tape attached it to one of the windshield bags, and seeing as I ride a street glide I can plug the charger into the cig lighter. Works like a champ.

Almost the same road I took. Got a $100 Magellan Maestro on sale. I trade it between the car and bike, for the bike I take the suction cup mount apart and bolt the arm to the left mirror stem hole not used on the StreetGlide. Works great and I've never had a problem with it. Plug it into the cig lighter as well.

Had a 2610 and mounted it with a Ram Mount (they make a special bracket for the Streetpilot series) - used the Garmin hardwire. Worked great. Dropped it pretty hard once and it later started to act weird.

Replaced it with a 2720, again refurbished by Garmin with a one year warranty and with recent maps. Still about $110. You would probably pay about $30 for the Ram Mount and $25 for the hard wire. Works great. Does all the GPS stuff I want (route planning, finding gas, food and a roof) - tells me where I am and when to turn.

Mine fell off last year and I never found my way back home. I'm posting this from a public library somewhere west of the Mississippi.

You can buy a Tom Tom One for $99 now. I use a Garmin that I switch between my bikes and truck. All GPSs use flash memory now, so vibration isn't a concern anymore. Just keep them out of the weather. No need to spend $500 on a Zumo.
