So I go in the garage to hop on hte ride and go for a cruise. We moned into a new house and are still unpacking os stuff is kinda scattered thruout but I usually keep stuff clear of the bike. I goto hop on it and when I go to put hte kickstand up my right foot hits a skateboard and I drop it. The right tank got a dent about the size of a golfball and the right footrest bent up into the pipe a lil. Cant believe I did this. Its a 94 heritage and was 100% flawless before this. Not 1 scratch. Are these dents "popable" or is it time to start searchin ebay? Maybe this is a sign that I need to change it up a little.
A good "paintless dent repair" technician should be able to push it out if the dent is not creased and the paint is not broken. I have had many small dings and dents removed on cars in this manner without being able to detect where the dent was originally.
its a pretty clean dent if you could call it that. Not creased or anything. Basically it landed on a ceramic elephant and the dent is about the same if you jsut put your thumb on the tank and pushed really hard. Nice and circle. Small chip in the paint 1/4 inch that touch up paint may take care of. Do those ding king things work on thick metal? I'll jsut replace it when I find hte right deal but for now just want to punch it out.
You can contact a dentless repair concern, my guess is that the thickness of the steel on the gas tank won't allow for the process to be of much use. The tank's steel is a much thicker gauge than say a car fender or door panel. A good auto body shop might be able to help out, but you'd be looking at having some sort of filler in the final repair, but all in all, it might be cheaper than a new gas tank. You'll still know the dent was there but unless the bike shakes like a blender, the filler should hold.
Price them out and you'll have to make a decision based on that. Either way the tank has to come off, but with a new tank there will be minimal downtime since your old tank will not be reused. For me, I think a new tank or custom paint job is in order.
Just an FYI..
My pant leg caught on the peg when i stopped at a light the other day, couldnt get the foot down. Luckily I was having one of those good stop days where the bike is nice and flat when you stop. I just lifted my leg and got it down the second try but it made me think. I want some of those stirups that clip to the jeans and go under your boots.
and yea a bone head move is getting off the bike and walking away with out the jiffy stand down.
What you had was a shitty day.
