Not trying to down play your up coming accomplishment. All I have every done is the SS 1,000. To me that high level stuff is a waste of a perfectly good M/C. Most people into that stuff start at the bottom and work up. I have a friend that has done the Iron Butt 3 different times. He has done everything listed on their web site. He is a BMW M/C dealer and having a new bike for that run is no problem for him, me I can't afford it!!

i guess you could call me 'boy' right now. i thought 1000 in 24 was hard enough. even though (physically) after sleeping some, i could've got right back on and rode some more, i just didn't want to! that evening, and the next day, i was ready to ride some more.

Overall I see only one possible problem on your attempt,

The handlebars,

I did the SaddleSore 1000 on my FXD without a windshield for the same reason as you,

The only difference with my ride was that at the time it had the stock low bar handlebar on it. This gave me bracing against the windblast,

Since then I have put the same bar as you on the FXD, and during a 750 mile run to the "Tail of The Dragon" I definitely missed the lower original equipment bars,

If possible, using a sleeping bag as a backrest will help out immensely, making it easier on your arms and chest muscles, strap the bag on somehow, the bulkier the bag the better for your back,

I had the mids and forward highway pegs on my bike, and being able to move the legs around really helped avoid pins and needles on my butt, I did have a Mustang Vintage Solo as a seat, and that helped,

On my run I lost time by going the wrong way through two different time zones, PLUS, I had to stop for a Warranty Checkup at a dealer on the trip, lost an hour and a half there, took to nice meal breaks besides quick gas stop breaks, and still made the trip in 21 hours,

Prop your back!!!!!!

Good Luck!!!

I know you will do it, just be a stubborn bastard and do not let the ride get to you, tell yourself you can DO IT!!!!

Default IRON BUTT... MADE IT!!!! Just got back.

I couldn't sleep last night. Got less than 3 hours of sleep and shouldn't have done it but got up and left for the ride at 12:15am. Just got back about an hour ago. 1083.3 miles round trip. I was making REALLY good time on the way out there and then started to relax some and started stopping more often. Still made it the 1083 miles in just under 17 hours. That works out to about 63 mph. I ate breakfast at Burger King, went in and sat down and all. Ate lunch at Wendy's, went in and sat down and ate inside there, too. Stopped at the Harley dealer in Daytona Beach and talked them probably ten minutes, made 11 stops for gas I believe it was. So when I was on the road I might have been doing a tiny bit over the 70 mph speed limit. The bike didn't miss a beat. I have NOT checked the oil since I got back to see if it used any but will do that tomorrow. The bike got really good gas mileage on the trip. I went well over 150 miles on several tanks when I actually waited for the low-fuel light to come on. Normally for the around-town and backroads riding I do I get about 115-120 miles out of a tank before the light comes on. My butt's a little sore (don't worry, no pictures), and my lower back is a little stiff and my ears are still ringing (should have worn the earplugs I had in my pockets the whole time) and my hands are a little achy. I wonder what I'll feel like tomorrow. I have all of the paperwork/receipts to submit to the Iron Butt Association but they say it can take 2-3 months sometimes to get everything back. I probably won't even submit it until after I go back to work next week (when I'll have access to a copier machine). The ride was very uneventful. No close-calls, nothing like that. I found out that the speedometer does not continue to move past the 120 mph mark. Once you exceed 120 mph the needle just stops moving and then when you slow down the needle just stays there until your speed drops below 120. I'm sure Steve/Centerline already knows this. heh heh. When I hit about the 400 mile mark I was thinking "Hell, maybe I'll get up tomorrow morning and do another 500 miles to get the '1500 miles in 36 hours' certification." But by the time I hit about the 650 mile mark I was thinking "F*CK THAT." 1000 miles in 24 hours is enough for me. As expected, it wasn't really a FUN ride. But... I did it, and with no windshield. It's Miller Time.
