When I up-shift a gear (from 3rd to 4th etc) the shift lever gets stuck, and stays in the "up" position until I gentley move it down with my foot, and then, and only then will it let me up-shift again to the next gear...
I just fixed this on my brother-in-law's bike. Same exact thing. You need to clean and lube the shaft for the shif lever. Took about 15 minutes. You will need to take it apart but it's very easy. I also used very very fine steel wool both on the shaft and the bushing. He said it never woked better. Hope that helps.
ok, I'll have to try that, ..... just un-bolt the shift lever ? the part I move up and down with my left foot ? then what put some type of lube on it ?
You will have to remove the shifter lever. Then remove the chrome acorn nut that attaches to the shifter arm going back to the tranny. Then lightly tap the shaft back toward the motor untill it pops out. There are 2 o-rings, one on each side. Clean everything up like I said and lube up with a grease. something that can resist water would be best and put it all back together.
What happens is that moisture still gets in there and starts to oxidize. After a while it builds up and starts to lock up.
wd40 may help in the short term, but long term, it will gum up. this isn't one of those jobs that you only want to do once. it's easy, so use any good wheel bearing grease, then you'll want to do it again next year anyway. its also a good idea to make sure that you keep the bolt that tightens the shift lever tight. they have a tendency to strip the splines, then when you go to shift, your lever goes flat to the floorboard and doesn't move. then you're putting a new shaft on (and hoping the shift lever is still good). good thing they only run about 20 bucks for the shaft. now the lever, thats an expensive piece.
