Thanks for all the input. Im talking to the people at our local Harley dealership here and it looks like i'm gonna be getting the sportster 1200 custom.
Hey Sparky, your opinion is wrong. I grew up riding dirtbikes...not street bikes. Just because I work (just started btw) at a shop doesnt mean they upload bike specs into my head. Thats what forums are for....correct?
As for everyone else, thanks alot...ya'll have been real helpful and I look forward to posting up soon.
They are quick but in no way the fastest HD air cooled or not. IMHO, using simple power to weight ratios, the Dyna is the fastest air cooled HD. It has the same motor as the baggers in such a light chassis.
I get on it every now and then. It's plenty fast even running the stock setup. I'm 6'4" 205 lbs so I'm no tiny guy but I'm no lard *** either. if you put another 2 grand into it you could increase the power some and notice another difference as well.
When the demo fleet was at my dealer, I test rode a sportster 883, & compaired to my EG it was very toylike, but I had no problems keeping up with the pack...
The rubber mount Sportsters will go as fast as you need to get locked up anywhere, and not shake your teeth out. It's a smaller bike and with a passenger or luggage you'll be a little cramped, but thousands of them are out on the road travelling everyday. Don't get too upset over jap performance figures. I've never seen anyone ride a spec sheet, and they're really only important if you're looking to belly up to the bar and bench race.

I started ridng on Yamaha Enduro dirt bikes in 1967, but it didn't take long for me to gather comparative info on other bikes, including Harleys, because most of the guys riding/working on metrics back then were prone to giving Harleys down the road...
A bunch of my friends ride metrics, I've been to those shops with them, and anyone working there is more than happy to give you their opinion of ANY Harley...and the dumbest guy I ever met working in a Harley shop could tell me what a Ninja or a 'Busa can do...
