A group of other riders said they had just lost one of their group to a lightning strike while riding. They had decided after that to just park the bikes on the side of the road and get out into the brush and wait it out. That has been my plan ever since.

Closest strike was about 30 ft when lightening struck a fiberglass CB whip antennae, it snowed fiberglass. Nothing left in the mount. Lightening has killed a few motorcylists in the last couple of years. It has my utmost respect.

If I see it with in a mile, I am done until it moves on. Been lucky 3 times, 2 times in my pickup, #1 a tree limb about 12 inch came out of the tree and almost hit the hood, #2 rocks off the side of the road hit the side of the pickup, #3 standing around with 3 other guys BSing lighting hit a steel pole about 10 feet away two guys when down, unhurt, myself just walked over to the port-a-john and got rid of my unware. Don't want to push my luck any more.
