Man, lighten up on the (search ****'s). I merely suggested a search beacause you often find other interesting comments as well. And who the hell you calling a ****?
Years ago, the ride bell originally had an actual meaning.
A long time ago, when the Sturgis Rally was known as the "Jack Pine Races", when you paid your entry fee and you were given a little brass bell on a ribbon to pin onto your shirt similar to the plastic or paper wrist band they give you now-a-days to show that you paid your way in. Most folks threw it away on their way home but some folks kept them and when they had a break-down or were stranded they would give a bell to the rider that stopped and helped them out and that rider would hang the bell on their bike to show that they were a good Samaritan and had helped other bikers.
Somewhere along the line all of that has been lost. There are plenty of bullshit stories about them warding off pot hole demons or assuring your way into heaven if you die in a crash... there are dozens of legends that people have attached to the bell and now every wannabe out there has one on their bike.
Wow that's cool. I'm gonna print this and share it with my know it all friends. Buy the way, I always stop. No matter what you ride. Some times I'm good for shi#, but I'll keep you company while you're waiting.
Thanks for the post dastark, I didn't take any offence to the search button comment. I did do a search after the fact, and found some good stories. I'm a new, old guy. What can I say...

The day i picked up my bike my wife bought me one. Her brother passed away 4 yrs. ago at the age of 42. not only was he my brother-in-law, but he was my best freind since the 7th grade. the bell she got me has angels on it. When she gave it to me she said Steve would be watching over me when i'm on the road. Then the first place i rode to was the cemetary, just to let him know i finally got my harley.
If it's not to personal, how did your brother pass away?
My mother bought one for me in the shape of a fire hydrant with a maltese cross on the front, how appropriate. Just put it on before my ride this evening.
I personally find the evil road spirits are a pretty fun crowd once they've had a few brews in them!!!!! with every little trick they play, that is something that i will take into consideration next time and wont let that happen again!! like leavin home without a cell phone or no tools to work on your bike with. i guess the only supersticion i have is mountin your bike on the left side just like a horse!
My wife bought me a bell with a bike on it. My mother bought me a guardian angel on a motorcycle pin. I use both. It's nice to know people care about you.
