This was posted about a month ago. It is a CHP directive instructing officers how to interpret and cite the noted section of the motor vehicle code. The motor vehicle code itself is unchanged. It's a step in the right direction, but citations can still be issued. However, if cited it will only be a fix-it ticket now, which does not get reported to your insurance company. Also, this doesn't prevent a city cop with a hair across his butt from throwing the book at you (at least until someone contests it in court).
I think it would be a good idea for anyone inclined to test code enforcement to carry a copy of this CHP bulletin with them. It might not help if stopped by a townie or Sheriff, but it can't hurt.
They didn't make riding with a helmet mandatory here in Cali until 1991.
Thanks to DICK Floyd, the pompous azz state politician that actually is on record saying he did not give a damn what "those" bikers thought.

A lot of them think that most of the time, they just don't want to go on record as saying it..
I seem to recall a post yesterday regarding people being ticketed on the 118 (Simi Valley) freeway for non DOT helmets by CHP. I do not trust the bulletin and wear a DOT helmet regardless as I got ticketed for a non DOT back in 2007. Of course I showed up to court with a full face and the officer failed to show. Surprise surprise.
It all depends on the cop and jurisdiction. Some like motorcops can base their stop and cite knowing that it was non DOT, others like patrol guys just leave you alone. The big thing now is exhaust pipes. They could really care less if i am wearing my simpson helmet or my biltwell old school non dot helmet. California sucks
Amazing, someone actually tried to do something about a stupid instead of just complaining. Too bad more people won't get involved and try to change things for the better.
