Help primary chaincase plug thread sealant.
I've got a 2001 Fatboy and I'm changing the primary fluid in the book it states leave the draing plug 4.1-4.6 extruding from the base of the chaincase. There isn't a o-ring and it was previously tighten much more than the 4.1-4.6 level and had a seepage.
I've read that you can apply plumbing pipe sealant and what I have is plumbers tape will that work?
Thanks

On the Expert Village video on changing the primary fluid, the tech recommended replacing the drain plug each time.

I haven't replaced my plug, but next time I change fluids I will see how much HD wants for the plug. Surely not more then a dollar or so.

That is a tapered plug and it is not supposed to be ran in till it stops. Too many people over tighten it. Snug is good. I always thought that was a bad design for plugs. I use the loctite brand of plumbers paste.
Drain Plug should be around $3.00 or so..

It's my understanding that the tapered plug is a harder metal than the case it's going in. The case could crack if the plug is over tightened. The paste will dry and prevents the plug from loosening. Service manual says to clean plug and reinstall.
I use teflon paste purchased from a plumbing store. I have enough paste in the container to last 100 years if it doesn't dry up before that. I use it on my engine/primary/trans plugs. I also clean off the old teflon residue with brake cleaner everytime I change fluids. It may be overkill but it is recommended by Fix Your Hog dvd guys. They don't recommend plumbers tape.
