Well using an IR thermometer, checked with a electronic bulb type thermometer of 4 bikes i tested after a hour run head temps were in the 350 range for front and 400 range for rear. Measured on the flat next to spark plug. Oil temps were in the 215-235 range. You need to remember that exaust gas temps are in the 1400 -1600 range under load. gasoline ignites at like 450-475 (cant recall exactly) cams , compression add to that.
Thanks for all the input. I was just curious as I just installed a PCV on my Road King. I took the bike for a 30-40 minute run and when I got home I connected my lap top to the bike and the reading again was 255 degrees. I would assume the oil temp was lower than that, but by all indications I have nothing to worry about. (not that I was worried I was simply curious). BTW - for anyone who is interested the other day when I went out the outside temp high 80's and humid. The ride was a good mix of in town and highway. - Anyway - thanks again everyone.
