Until bought my 08 always wondered about this 5th gear whine .. is true is a different pitch in the frenquency of the other gears but if hear no differece at all when switching back from 6th to 5th you need hearing aids bad.. I did find Spectro 6 Speed Oil to tune it down nicely as compared to one was in it originally which I assume was probably Formula Plus

It's all part of their (HD) plan to make everyone that worries about stuff like this run out and buy a 2010 cause they changed a gear...

Never noticed any nose but I switched mine to H-D synthetic from day 1. Of course, I don't stay in 5th - crack it open to 60+ and shift to overdrive (6th)!

The 5th gear whine was disliked by many,and yes most did fade or end with more mileage,different fluids,tighter build specs during production.After all the dislike died down-3yrs later-harley felt safe and finally redesigned, hopefully putting that one to sleep.

Shifting into 6th at 60? No wonder you can't hear the wine. The chug-a-lugging of your bogged down motor covers all the other noises.

With all the post about clunky trannies, 5th gear whine, rattles & blah, blah, blah, I think some of you need to buy a Cadillac & forget about Harleys!

I have no 5th gear whine on my '08 Street Bob. However, I recently rented an '08 Ultra Classic and did notice quite a distinct 5th gear whine. That really surprised me. Is (was) the problem model specific?
