Beginner....how long?
Help! I have been labeled "a beginner"! I have had my license and bike for about a month. 2005 XL 883 Custom. Have ridden around 600 miles so far. I ride every chance I get...in town, highway, country roads. (solo) I have never had a bike or ridden before except as a passenger and that was yeeeaaaarrrsss ago!
Cryptoboy, you REALLY need to fix my computer. hehe
All I'm good for at this point is putting **** back on the computer (but it's clean ****, no viruses!) LOLHeather and KBFXDLI have some great advice! What I would add to KB's, I can't emphasize enough to ride at your own comfortable pace. I ride with some friends that LOVE cornering hard. Even now, I'm not quite as comfortable with it to the extent they are, but I don't let it bother me. I let them tear through the corners and I catch up with them on the straights. It's ok to push it a little bit, but know your limits (and since you're starting out, set your limits low). We had a guy riding with us once (I think his name was Bill), he made it fine on the way out, we turned around to head back the way we came (though the twisty roads), and I was third in line (out of four), Bill was behind me, and he couldn't hold on one corner and ended up going off the road. He literally went into a pile of dirt (I remember seeing the cloud in my mirror). Jacked his bike up (it was a new Victory Kingpin), and as we were literally out in the middle of nowhere, had a hard time trying to get a tow truck out (really crappy phone reception). Luckily he wasn't hurt, just bruised up a little bit (he was wearing a helmet though). He was an older, experienced rider, but on a newer bike.
My point is, if you ride with someone more experienced, don't feel like you have to keep up with them in places like corners. It's better to take a little ribbing down the road than to spend the weekend (if not longer) in the ER.......
As soon as you are considered experienced, you lose the safety net of being a beginner. In other words . . . you can't say "don't blame me - I'm only a beginner."
